STATUS SUPPLIES
CMM TO PTSM

PTSM PRECISION ENGINEERING

PTSM Ltd of Newton Aycliffe has invested in a High Precision CNC CMM that will streamline quality processes and allow it to take on new work.

The company says the purchase from Status Metrology of a Mitutoyo 7-10-6 will allow quicker and more accurate reporting than its existing manual CMMs, speeding the inspection process and allowing it to respond to customers more quickly.

It will also help the company win contracts involving more complex components and higher levels of accuracy. Director, Steve Metcalfe says: "We have come across several opportunities in the past year where we have had the machines and the skills to make the parts, but not the inspection capabilities to prove we can do it. This investment will allow us to go after these contracts."

The machine is highly programmable utilising the latest Pc-Dmis CMM software allowing for several set ups for repeated jobs, saving set up times and delivering a much faster result on large batches of repeat jobs.

The high performance CMM combines high speed and high acceleration and reduces measuring time significantly.

Steve emphasised "It's quite unusual for a company of our size, to make such a big investment in a CNC CMM. We recognise that it is impossible for UK businesses to compete with other countries on price, so we have always sold on quality, response time and service. Our policy is to continually invest in providing higher levels of quality because that's what our customers need. This investment will help us provide a broader and more efficient service, which many of our competitors can't offer."

UNISON Embrace CAD Modelling in 3D Measurements

Unison is a world leader in mechanical and electrical systems for various markets. With strong leadership and a rich history, Unison Industries maintains a strong presence in aviation and beyond.

The factory in Nelson, Lancashire has been using CMMs for High Accuracy measurement for over 25 years.

The feasibility to streamline their quick turnaround and short production runs for new components was overwhelming in recommending the use of CAD models for measurement.

Having supported their CMM equipment over the years Status Metrology promoted the advantages of Pc-Dmis CAD++ CMM software. The system now allows Unisons QC department to write and prepare part programs offline as soon as a CAD model is available even before the part is made.

Neil Holland, Unisons Business Leader said "By preparing the inspection routines in advance of manufacture massively helps streamline our production and reduces our measurement inspection and delivery times"

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

Here are just a few of the people
who have attended our
CMM Training courses

How important is Training to Measurement Quality?

"The worsening skills shortage has to be addressed. Current workers need to be up-skilled, and youngsters encouraged into the engineering professions. For the latter, good career possibilities have to be seen, and the number of technical courses at colleges and universities increased massively.A mere five percent of UK students are on an engineering course, compared to nearer 50 percent in China and India."

How good are your measurements?

Measurement quality is important in not only the calibration of the Dimensional Metrology hardware being used to take the measurements, but also how the Operator is taking the measurements. Typically most Engineers do not have time to search out how to do their job as they have bosses that expect them to "just get it done", most times without any training.

There has been a lot of research into 3D Metrology and the issues facing all aspects of Metrology today.

In our opinion, you cannot make an accurate measurement without training on how to perform and knowledge of the measurement application itself.

Nowhere would these be as critical as dimensional measurements as in many cases there exists a larger margin for errors to occur in.

So yes training and continuous education is very important to measurement quality!

Did you know?

A pound of feathers weighs more than a pound of gold. Precious metals like gold are weighed using troy weights, in which a pound consists of 12 ounces (5,760 grains). Objects such as feathers are weighed using avoirdupois weights, in which a pound consists of 16 ounces or 7,000 grains.

A "light year" is a measure of distance, not time. It is defined as the distance light travels in one year. Light moves at a velocity of about 300,000 kilometres each second, so in one year, it travels about 9,500,000,000,000 kilometres.

King Richard I the Lion-Hearted passed the first law requiring standards for length and volume. These standards were made from iron and were kept by sheriffs and magistrates.

The number 10 is used as a convenient base to count with, but the Gauls of ancient France, the Mayas of Central America, and other peoples used a base of 20. The Sumerians, the Babylonians, and others after them used a base of 60 - convenient because 60 can be evenly divided by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30. The use of base 60 survives in the division of hours into minutes and minutes into seconds, and the division of the circle into 360 (60 × 6) degrees.

And finally ...

Napoleon was not particularly short. He was 5 feet 6½ inches tall, which was a typical height at the time. This height is equal to 5 feet 2 inches in old French feet (pieds du roi), which led to confusion as to his true height.
