Charles Rolls statue in Monmouth

Charles Rolls
The life and achievements of Charles Rolls were celebrated in Monmouth on 12 July ~ the 100th anniversary of his death. Paul Barrett, who organised the event, said that the co-founder of Rolls-Royce, whose ancestral home was the Hendre estate near the town, was a true pioneer in more ways than one.
He was the entrepreneur really, selling cars before he met Henry Royce, who was good with engines and everything. Charles got interested in flying and he really left the cars to Henry, but then the company caught up and started manufacturing engines for Spitfires and all sorts.
Charles Rolls achievements remain extraordinary. He was the first Briton to fly across the Channel and back without stopping. He was a founding member of the Automobile Club of Great Britain and the Royal Aero Club in 1903. In the same year, he won the Gordon Bennett Gold Medal for the longest single flight time, he was a keen balloonist and made more than 170 balloon ascents. Tragically, he was the first man to die in an aeronautical accident in 1910, aged just 32.
Determined to keep Mr Rolls legacy alive, Mr Barrett had meetings with Roll-Royce plc, Monmouthshire Council and the Nelson Museum in Monmouth to discuss commemorative activities such as hot-air ballooning, vintage Rolls-Royce car parades and the unveiling of a new plaque on his statue in Monmouths Agincourt Square. He said: Its quite a sad story really. Charles Rolls died in 1910, his father died shortly after, and his brother died in the Somme. He had another brother who had mental-health problems, and his sister never had any children. The Rolls family died out in a generation

Did You Know ?
1. There are 4.3 million businesses in the UK
2. 3.16 million businesses are 'one man bands'
3. 453,000 new businesses were started last year
4. 1.17 million businesses employ 2-500 people
Technology Growth
Few disagree that the UK urgently needs sustainable economic growth to restore jobs and tax revenues. But planning a route map will be far from simple, and the shape of the final destination is far from clear.
Business services is the largest contributor to growth and will continue to be central to the UK economy. Returning to a golden age is never easy and it's often not desirable.
Looking through the telescope at how competitor nations are shaping up and working out what goods and services to export to them will be the real challenge for businesses, governments and think tanks.

Worlds Most Precise Clock Keeps Time to One Second in 3.7 Billion Years
Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have built an enhanced version of an experimental atomic clock based on a single aluminum atom that is now the world's most precise clock, more than twice as precise as the previous pacesetter based on a mercury atom. The new aluminum clock would neither gain nor lose one second in about 3.7 billion years.
It works on the same basic principle that microwave atomic clocks have employed since the 1950s, but utilises optical (visible) light, which being of a higher frequency, provides more accurate timekeeping.
Clocks have come a long way in the past one thousand years. First there was the Sun Dial Clock and in 1088, the Chinese developed a water clock accurate to about 100 seconds a day.
In the 17th Century, pendulum clocks were accurate to about 10 seconds a day. By the 1930s, the most accurate clocks kept time to within a second over a three-day interval.
Clocks have myriad applications. The extreme precision offered by optical clocks is already providing record measurements of possible changes in the fundamental "constants" of nature, a line of inquiry that has important implications for cosmology and tests of the laws of physics, such as Einstein's theories of special and general relativity. Next-generation clocks might lead to new types of gravity sensors for exploring underground natural resources and fundamental studies of the Earth. Other possible applications may include ultra-precise autonomous navigation, such as landing planes by GPS
