The economy of the United Kingdom is the world's sixth-largest national economy measured by nominal GDP.

Experienced commentators predict that manufacturing will grow more modestly than last year but will still outpace the wider economy at a 3.5pc annual rate predicts he EEF organisation.

Solid growth in orders for exports, particularly to the emerging markets, will help rebalance the economy and spur the sector on to lead the UK's continued recovery, the organisation said in its latest forecasts.

That means the manufacturing sub-sectors with high exposure to export markets – such as mechanical engineering and metal products – should perform the strongest.

However, the Government's austerity measures will start to bite, EEF said, while higher- than-expected inflation will remain a threat to profits as commodity prices climb. The ongoing crisis in the eurozone over nations' debt burden could threaten the strong export performance if it intensifies, while access to finance is still a problem,

"Manufacturing now looks set to be at the heart of the rebalanced growth the economy needs with sectors most exposed to international markets likely to post the highest growth," said EEF's chief economist Lee Hopley.

Reduce, Reuse, ReCycle!

During our time at Status Metrology we seen a number of Metrology technologies emerge and develop, none more so relevant than what is now our core business Refurbishing Coordinate Measuring Machines.

Over the last few years the latest and most modern precision 3 axis CMMs have almost achieved what they are capable of in terms of Accuracy and Speed. Now we see a growth in specialist systems focussing on Nano and Satellite measurement not forgetting Tomography.

‘As a given’, most CMM systems can now take full advantage of CAD models for measurement but the designers still need to incorporate tolerancing.

What we see in the future is that these modern machines will develop to encompass a variety of probes on one frame eg Tactile and Scanning Probes as well as Non Contact Camera and Laser devices.

For Status Metrology we also see this as an opportunity for our future growth and we can assure our existing and potential clients that we will be promoting and supporting these innovative products and services to help improve your technology and products.

CMM TRAINING BLOCKS

Did you know?

"Painting the Forth Bridge" is a colloquial expression for a never-ending task, coined on the erroneous belief that, at one time in the history of the bridge repainting was required and commenced immediately upon completion of the previous repaint.

According to a 2004 New Civil Engineer report on modern maintenance, such a practice never existed, although under British Rail management, and before, the bridge had a permanent maintenance crew.

Technology from the oil & gas industry is being used to help paint the Forth Bridge in the hope that the work will not need to be carried out again for decades!

A special paint system is being used to coat the 119 year old structure, which, it is claimed, will protect it from rust for at least 25 years and possibly longer.

Carl Burrell, coating manager at Leigh Paints Bolton said “It essentially binds with the metal to stop moisture getting through. Guarantee is a strong word, but yes, there is a warranty for 25 years”.

The bridge , which carries the East Coast Main Line across the River Forth, will require 500,000 litres of paint. It was the first bridge to be built entirely of steel and is still the longest cantilever railway bridge in the world.
